OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE
When you hear the phrase ‘Bah Humbug!’ what comes to mind immediately?
If you answered Scrooge, you are not far off. Bah Humbug originates from the Charles Dickens’ novel ‘A Christmas Carol’, a phrase used by the protagonist Ebenezer Scrooge as a declaration of disgust with modern Christmas traditions. However, it is also a Christmas time visual art salon which contradicts the bitter meaning Scrooge has associated with the term. Bah Humbug represents the emergence of a fresh way of thinking, not just towards Christmas but towards breaking the art scene in Dublin during the social upheaval.
The ethos of Bah Humbug is to provide an informal platform for emerging visual artists to sell their work at accessible prices and engage both the public and the artists in an atmospheric Christmas salon of music, tea and food. Featuring on the day is a warm & cosy ephemeral café including tea and cakes kindly donated local cafés. Special guest pianist Alberto Gariglio will be playing live music on the in-house upright old piano throughout the day.
Artworks spanning from drawing, illustration, photography, printing, mixed-media, stencil & graffiti art will be on sale. The selected artists encompass an exciting mix of emerging and established artists, many of whom are new to exhibiting in the distinctive Back Loft.
Bah Humbug is brought to life by two recent graduates from I.A.D.T. Dun Laoghaire, Áine Belton & Aoife O'Sullivan. Bah Humbug merges their artistic practice with a new curatorial role within an intensive internship programme entitled the Back Loft Creative Team at La Catedral Studios. As creative partners they are also referred to as ‘Pigeonbrain Productions’ which not only is dedicated to creating exhibitions but also to making short films. Over a time span of two months, these two enthusiastic emerging artists have painstakingly worked on organising and selecting a wide range of fresh and vibrant work guided by La Catedral’s Founder Antonella Scanu. Working as a team the two artists-curators have successfully reached their aim of gathering tasteful art works at keen prices in keeping with the festive mood.
Bah Humbug will be open to the public on Sunday the 13th of December from 2pm-7pm in the Back Loft in La Catedral Studios, St. Augustine St., Dublin 8.
